What’s the City Skyline Challenge?

Vanessa Baker has twelve years of experience in the nonprofit sector, first learning the craft of fundraising at the YMCA and later taking leadership roles as Development Director at Outward Bound California and Board Chair for Impact Bay Area.  In 2014 Vanessa mobilized Outward Bound California staff and supporters to create the City Skyline Challenge, a new signature fundraising event that vaulted Outward Bound Californa from a best-kept secret in San Francisco to a well-known and well-loved public cause.

The City Skyline Challenge is a peer to peer fundraiser with a twist — rather than raising funds to walk, run or bike, participants raise funds to rappel down the outside of downtown San Francisco high rise buildings — getting a taste of that challenge and self-discovery that Outward Bound imparts to students every day on expeditions. Over the past five years, the City Skyline Challenge has garnered more than 5 million media impressions annually, rappelled nearly 500 individuals from staggering heights, and raised more than $1.5 million to support students from underrepresented communities in life-changing outdoor learning adventures.

From a US Marine to nonprofit executive director, I've been fortunate to do a lot of stuff. My quick history is I’m a brand marketer with a background in social good. In the process of running a small educational nonprofit, I learned the value of storytelling and digital branding. That’s how I got involve in marketing, websites, consulting via my podcast as well, and being an adjunct business professor at the local community college.
