How Many Times Should You Blog?

There’s a lot of different information out there on blogging frequency. When someone asks me, “How much should I blog?” I tell them it depends on the brand.

Every brand is different. Not all companies are the same, so it becomes dangerous to answer generically. I should also add for those who are looking to be paid for your blogs, start standing in line.

Great content is being published every hour all over the world. It comes in blogs, videos, social media, infoagraphics, and images.

My answer to those people is typically the same of posting once a month is a good number to start with. Don’t complicate it either. One blog a month will give you a great foundation for creating the presence you want over time.

The Blog Posting Debate

The controversy over how you should blog is an interesting one. It’s almost like politics. Is it frequency or quality? Most get stumped and don’t know how to go about it.

I advise my clients to be true to their brand identity. Don’t be fake. Be you and true to your product/service.

If the goal for you is to rank on the top page of Google, you have your work cut out for you. Google has a specific algorithm and different factors that impact your blog. I’m not saying you can’t do it, but get ready to spend some time doing your due diligence. To organically rank, you have 200 factors to consider.

Quality content is important. Put out information that has been helpful in your career, especially if you’re serving a niche market.

High Quality Content Matters

When I answer the question over and over, I get the deer in headlights when it comes to once-a-month postings. They believe they have to post more or write novels. The goal is to answer questions in the most succinct way possible. Since most don’t like to read and the majority of folks have a 3rd grade reading level, your content needs to be rich with quality value bombs.

For the readers who truly enjoyed your content, they’ll share it. That’s the ultimate high five.

Writing blogs don’t have to be writing an MLA research paper for college. Make it your own. Use your voice.

In order to write high quality blogs, here some tips:

  • Give yourself enough time to be creative;
  • Share your idea with someone who understands your industry;
  • Don’t assume everyone knows it;
  • Create a calendar of when to post; and
  • Consistently share on every medium/channel for distribution.

As I conclude, you don’t want someone to say to you, “You can do that?!” Even worse, “You have a business that does that work?!”

And then you have a pause of not knowing how to exactly how to respond without you looking like you didn’t spend enough attention on promoting your brand.

That’s the mother of all facepalms because you haven’t told enough people about your craft. And one of the best ways to do that is writing a blog. Seth Godin has written a blog every day for over 12 years.

So the next time you ask the question of “how many times should I post a blog?” Do what’s going to be best for your brand, company and client base.
