What is scoliosis? You may have heard of scoliosis. You may even know someone who has it. Scoliosis “is a disorder in which there is a sideways curve of the spine or backbone” (Niams).
I was diagnosed at age 12 at Doernbechers Children’s Hospital in Portland, OR. While is doesn’t seem like a big deal, it made my middle and high school years very difficult. I underwent 3 surgeries, each taking me out of school for months at a time, physically and mentally.
To the right are my x-rays, taken before and after surgery one. As you can see, I had a pretty severe curve of about 60 degrees. My scoliosis was too far along to try any form of preventative measures.
